Annie Varnot
Artist Bio 2020
Hovering between abstraction and representation, interdisciplinary artist Annie Varnot engages with several environmental themes, albeit in a non-linear, poetic way. These include human interference with nature, spectacular natural phenomena, and her own relationship to the landscape. Varnot earned an MFA in painting from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, MA, and a BS in Studio Art from Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, NY. Her work has been exhibited widely, including shows at Galapagos Art Space, Lumenhouse and SmackMellon, all in Brooklyn, NY; 55 Mercer Gallery, Kathleen Cullen Fine Arts, and Caelum Gallery in New York, NY; Wave Hill Garden and Cultural Center, Bronx, NY; Hampden Gallery and Herter Art Gallery, in Amherst, MA; University Galleries of Illinois State University, Normal, IL, and Islip Art Museum, East Islip, NY. Varnot has participated in numerous artist residencies, including Oak Spring Garden Foundation in Upperville, Virgina; Caldera Arts Center, Pine Meadow Ranch, and Playa all in Oregon; MASS MoCA: An Assets for Artists Program, North Adams, Massachusetts; Montello Foundation in Montello, Nevada; Jentel in Banner, Wyoming; Whiskeytown National Park in Whiskeytown, California; La Napoule Art Foundation in Mandelieu-La Napoule, France; Ross Creek Centre for the Arts in Canning, Nova Scotia; The Carriage House, Islip Art Museum; and Weir Farm in Wilton, Connecticut. She was a Visiting Artist Scholar at Illinois State University, Normal, IL in 2014. She has been the recipient of several grants, including the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant. She hiked the entire Pacific Crest Trail in 2017 and the Continental Divide Trail in 2019. She lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Her work is represented by Adelman Fine Art Gallery in San Diego, CA; Red Fox Art Gallery in Pound Ridge, NY; as well as Horizon Fine Art in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
